Central Otago Bike Trails
Melrose Cottages is close to the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Bike Trails and provides the perfect respite from the saddle. If you are travelling with a guided tour you can request us as your overnight stop. Or, if you are biking independently we can provide FREE transfers to/from the trails. Just let us know at the time of booking. Your stay with us includes continental breakfast.
Roxburgh Gorge Trail
This trail follows the Clutha Mata-au River through the Roxburgh Gorge to the Roxburgh Dam. The trail is in three parts, the first 10km goes from the town of Alexandra to Doctors Point. Here, you board a boat and travel 12kms down the lake to Shingle Creek where you disembark. The final section is 12 kms to the Roxburgh Dam.
This is a great day ride with the excitement of the boat ride in the middle. You could choose to spend the night and repeat the trail or join up and cycle the full Clutha Gold Trail.
Clutha Gold Trail
This trail offers 73km of cycling from the Lake Roxburgh Dam to the historic gold mining town of Lawrence. Cyclists follow the route of the Clutha River through the fruit growing Teviot Valley to Millers Flat (a night at Melrose Cottages in Ettrick here). Then, you join the Millenium biking track through the beautiful Beaumont Gorge. At Beaumont you head away from the river inland to Lawrence, a quaint town full of history.
Central Otago Rail Trail
Follow the former Otago Central branch railway line for 152km from Clyde through to Middlemarch. This famous trail takes bikers through the heartland of Central Otago. You can choose to cycle the whole trail or just experience some of the highlights (Lauder to Poolburn Dam is a must)!
Melrose Cottages is approximately one hour drive from Clyde on the main road towards Dunedin – this makes us a great place to head after finishing up or before starting your Rail Trail trip.
